Fit Tips:

I just recently went to a fitness conference in Toronto. Here are some of the things I learned from a lecture I took with Dr. Len Kravitz (a highly respected professor in the field of exercise science)

  1. Resistance Exercise (weight training) reverses the aging process in skeletal muscle.
  2. Men's VO2 max starts to drop at age 20, and for women we don't start to drop our VO2 max until age 35!! Yeah Ladies!
  3. Abdominal obesity does in fact increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality.
  4. People who get less sleep tend to be more prone to obesity. Optimal hours of sleep are 7.5 hours a night.
  5. Pedometer users tend to walk an additional 1 mile per day then non Pedometer users!
  6. Aerobic exercise fights aging and extends independence!

All the more reason to stay active!!

The Cabot Trail crew 2008 (Murray Beare, Leslie Horwitz-Beare, Karen Wheeler, Liam Doody, Carole Fujimoto, Brad Forden, James McDonell, Josee Thibodeau, Eric Leduc, Judy Field and Murray Kronick) for completing a very challenging and grueling 4 day bike ride that included hills with grades of 12-16% for 2-5km!! You guys are superstars, thank you for all your hard work!

Kathryn McCallion was our superb support crew! You were fantastic! Thank you so much, could not have done it without you Miss K!!!

Ken Partington spun with us this past year and was able to get onto his bike this spring and ride into work (15km) without any problem! This is what he had to say: "Just rode in to work for the first time. What a great ride!! 15 km in 55 minutes, all thanks to a wonderful winter of spinning. My legs felt great, and climbing hills was a joy. Thanks to you and Melanie for all the great training. I'm going to have a terrific summer of cycling." Thanks Ken!! Congrats on all your hard work.

Fall Spinning Schedule:
The session will begin Monday September 15th and run for 14 weeks. The last class will be on Saturday December 20th.

Monday: 7-8pm
Tuesday: 6-7pm and 7:30-9:30pm Spin and Strength
Wednesday: 6:30-8:30pm Spin and Strength
Thursday: 7-8pm
Saturday: 10-11am

Monday and Thursday:
Classes will run for 13 weeks and cost 136.50 (GST included) NO CLASS on Monday October 13th nor Thursday October 2nd (Bens Birthday!)
Tuesday Spin:
147, (GST included)
Tuesday or Wednesday Spin and Strength:

Saturday Spin:
147 (GST included)

REMEMBER if you are spinning more then once a week you get a 5% discount for spinning 2 x a week and 10% discount for 3 x a week!

Why not challenge yourself to a 2hour spin class this fall! 2- hour spin classes will be held on Friday November 7th and Friday December 12th. The cost will be 20+gst or 21.00 for each class. Sign up soon, as space is limited.

Melanie Clark, our Saturday morning instructor extroadinaire, went to London this year and met up with Lance Armstrong to give him a few riding techniques: "You know Lance, you waste a lot of energy standing out of your saddle like thatÖ you should really consider staying seated to maximize your efforts. Ý You want to keep that yellow jersey donít you?"
